Other Dental Implant FAQ’s
Along with the benefits and cost of dental implants, these are some other frequently asked questions.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Implant surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. Discomfort levels vary between patients. Some swelling and bruising are normal. We use advanced anaesthetic techniques and offer sedation dentistry options for anxious patients.
Sedation has its own requirements and risks (pre-operative fasting, need for escort, medical clearance may be required). We’ll discuss whether sedation is appropriate for you during your consultation.
How Soon Can I Return to Work?
Recovery time varies between patients. Many people return to work within a few days after implant placement. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for several days and follow a soft food diet initially. Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal for the first week. Contact us if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection.
How Long Does the Treatment Take?
The complete process typically takes several months, including healing time (usually 3-6 months for osseointegration, though this can vary). The timeline may be longer if bone grafting or other preliminary procedures are needed. We’ll provide a personalised timeline during your consultation.
The time required depends on the number of teeth to replace, the current state of your surrounding teeth and bone, your oral health, and other individual factors.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
When properly placed and maintained, dental implants can last many years. However, longevity varies significantly between individuals. Some implants may need replacement sooner due to factors including:
- Oral hygiene practices
- Overall health conditions
- Lifestyle habits (especially smoking)
- Implant location and bone quality
- Regular maintenance attendance
Our registered dentists have experience in dental implant procedures and will provide guidance on maintaining your implants during and after treatment.
