Dental Sealants

The back teeth naturally have deep grooves which toothbrush bristles can’t clean – illustrated in the picture below. Food, bacteria, and plaque get packed into these grooves so, no matter how often you brush your teeth, cavities may still occur in these areas.

Sealing the grooves with a thin plastic coating is very successful in preventing cavities; these sealants are best applied to children’s teeth when they first come through and before problems arise. They offer a simple, pain-free, and cost-effective solution, preventing tooth decay in the back teeth in later life. Adults can also benefit from sealants; when we catch problems early, they can be used to prevent the need for more costly and extensive restoration work in the future.

The back teeth naturally have deep grooves which toothbrush bristles can’t reach – illustrated in the picture below. Food, bacteria, and plaque can accumulate in these grooves, potentially leading to cavities.

Dental sealants involve applying a thin plastic coating to seal these grooves. When applied correctly, sealants can help prevent cavities in the back teeth. These are commonly recommended for children’s teeth when they first come through, and adults may also benefit from sealants in appropriate circumstances.

What to Consider:

  • Sealants typically last several years but may need to be reapplied
  • Regular dental check-ups are still essential to monitor sealant condition
  • Sealants don’t replace proper brushing and flossing
  • Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity
  • Sealants may occasionally chip or need repair

During your consultation, our dentists will assess whether sealants are suitable for you or your child and discuss the expected outcomes, maintenance requirements, and any associated costs.
