Important Information About Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that carries risks. A thorough dental assessment is required before teeth whitening treatment to ensure it is suitable for you.

Common Side Effects

  • Tooth sensitivity: This is the most common side effect. Sensitivity typically resolves within a few days to a week after treatment but may persist longer in some patients
  • Gum irritation: Contact with whitening gel can cause temporary irritation to gum tissue
  • Uneven results: Existing dental work (crowns, veneers, fillings) will not whiten and may become more noticeable after treatment

Individual Results Vary

The outcome depends on your tooth structure, existing shade, lifestyle factors (such as diet and smoking), and treatment compliance. Not all patients achieve the same level of whitening, and some patients may see minimal results.

Who Should Not Have Teeth Whitening

You should not have teeth whitening if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have untreated tooth decay or gum disease
  • You have exposed tooth roots or significantly worn enamel
  • You have sensitivity to peroxide products
  • You are under 18 years of age
  • You have significant existing dental restorations in visible areas

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Tooth sensitivity typically resolves within a few days but may persist longer in some patients
  • You may need to avoid certain foods and drinks (such as coffee, red wine, and highly pigmented foods) during and immediately after treatment
  • Some patients may experience temporary gum irritation
  • Follow-up appointments may be necessary to assess results and address any concerns

Treatment Duration

Treatment duration varies depending on the concentration used and individual tooth response. Your dentist will provide specific instructions for your treatment plan.
