Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss.  It can be linked to serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease and not only affects the gums but also eats away at the supporting bone, ultimately leading to tooth loss if left untreated.

People with gum disease usually have very little discomfort until the disease is in its late stages, when it is much more difficult to treat. Sufferers are often unaware that there is a problem until a tooth becomes loose or develops an abscess.

Warning signs to look out for include:

  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen, red gums
  • Gums which have receded from the teeth
  • Loose teeth or teeth which appear to have moved (gaps appearing)

The good news is that we can detect and successfully treat gum disease - Diamond Dental Care is one of only a few dental practices equipped and licensed for laser use, to help achieve even better outcomes. However, it takes your help and regular maintenance visits to control dental disease in the long term and prevent recurrence. Early detection and ongoing preventive action are the keys to beating this silent disease and keeping your teeth.

The back teeth naturally have deep grooves which toothbrush bristles can’t clean - illustrated in the pictures below. Food, bacteria and plaque get packed into these grooves so, no matter how often you brush your teeth, cavities may still occur in these areas.

Sealing the grooves with a thin plastic coating is very successful in preventing cavities; these sealants are best applied to children’s teeth when they first come through and before problems arise. They offer a simple, pain-free and cost effective solution, preventing tooth decay in the back teeth in later life. Adults can also benefit from sealants; when we catch problems early, they can be used to prevent the need for more costly and extensive restoration work in future.

Research estimates that as many as 1 in 5 people are wearing their teeth out early due to clenching or grinding habits. Often the damage is done while asleep and so people can be surprised to find out they are affected.

Whilst there is often no pain in the mouth, the signs of tooth grinding include:

Rough edges developing on the front teeth

Front teeth becoming short, stubby or chipped

Teeth becoming sensitive or loose

Sore jaw muscles

Once the teeth are significantly worn down, repair is complicated and expensive - it is better to slow the process down by wearing a protective night splint. There are a few different designs of splint, which we are happy to discuss with you.

Pain management injectable treatments are also available using BOTOX, with the added advantage of wrinkle reduction!
